Offer the child the plate of biscuits and support taking one piece only. Say 'Good choosing'. Move onto next child. Follow same routine for drinks. | Give only small portions to get the maximum number of interactions before the supply of food and drink runs out. Keep the pace speedy during this activity so that children do not get too desperate for the food. Initially support the child to take only one piece of biscuit and fade the support over time. Keep a watchful eye for the child taking extra turns! Reward desired behaviour with social praise. |
Shared toys Fun toys | Sit 2/3 children in a circle with no table. Demonstrate use of a fun toy e.g. Jack-in-a-box, spinner, pull back car, toys which squeak or feel funny! Hand to first child for a short go. Say '(Child's name) 's turn is finished and use 'finished' sign. Say 'Its time to share with a friend'. The child may spontaneously hand toy to a friend in the circle but may need support to pass the toy on. Reward passing toy on with social praise e.g. 'Good sharing!' Make sure each child has a turn but not necessarily in the order that they are sitting in the circle. | Choose high interest toys. Keep the pace of the activity snappy so children don't loose interest. Keep each child's turn short so children don't get impatient. |
Banging on a drum Drum | Sit 2/3 children in a circle with a drum on your knee. Bang on the drum and then hold the drum out to a child and encourage them to bang on the drum. Have few short goes - you bang the child bangs , you bang the child bangs etc Move to the next child and share turns banging as before. If you can sing or chant while doing this the activity is more fun! E.g. '(Child's name) is banging on a drum.............(Your name) is banging on a drum.............Match the words to the activity. | Keep the activity snappy and turns short. Use lots of social praise for behaviour you want. Use a drum that you bang with a hand not a beater. |
